Do…stop

If you’ve been involved in a road accident and either someone has been injured, you’ve hit an animal, or someone else’s property has been damaged, it’s illegal not to stop – even if it wasn’t your fault. Check if everyone is okay and seek medical help for anyone who needs it. Also, call the police if the road is blocked and you need further assistance.

Don’t… get angry

Being involved in a car accident is understandably a very scary experience for both drivers and passengers. So, if possible, keeping a level head can ensure that you stay calm and keep your passengers calm too. After checking everyone is ok, take a few deep breaths and don’t lose your temper.

Do…exchange details

Share your name and address with everyone if the accident caused damage or injury and swap insurance details with the other driver(s) involved. Remember to take down any details of other passengers and witnesses.

Don’t…admit responsibility

It’s a natural response to want to apologise after an accident but doing this or admitting fault at this time before you know the full story can make you liable even if it’s not your fault.

Do…record all details

It’s good idea to record as much information about the accident as possible, from details of the other vehicles involved like make, model, car and number plate, to the date and time and even the weather conditions. Take a note of any damage caused to the vehicles involved, taking pictures if you can. Take note of the road layout too, even drawing a picture could help.

If the accident hasn’t involved another car but has caused damage to private property, leave a note with your details but also take any pictures to cover yourself.

Don’t…forget to contact your insurance company

Phone your insurance company as soon as possible, preferably on the day of the accident. Give them all the details you gathered after the accident, most importantly the details of the other driver(s). Don’t want to claim? It’s best to still inform your insurer of the accident as the other driver may make a claim without you knowing.

Do…take it easy

Being involved in a car accident can leave us shaken and the shock can take a while to set in. Your adrenaline will keep you going for a while but it’s normal for that to wear off and leave you feeling unsettled, even if you don’t need medical attention. If you are ok you can continue to your destination, once you arrive, take a seat, catch your breath and talk to someone about it.
